How to Replace an audi car key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

woman-showing-the-car-keys-2022-12-16-22-09-32-utc-min-scaled.jpgCharles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will audi tt key fob not working appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for Nearest the connector and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero Ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car is able to start when the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is that they are very cheap and easy to find, especially when you're looking at an Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your car. It is a crucial part of your replacement audi A3 Key's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. If this sensor fails, it can cause problems for the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This part is common across the audi tt key fob 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find them in wrecking yards.
